Conference to showcase Nordic media literacy next autumn

The Media Literacy and Democracy Education for Societal Resilience conference, to be held in Oodi on 18-19 September 2025, will also present the results of the Nordic Media Literacy Survey. The two-day event is part of the Finnish and Åland Co-Presidencies of the Nordic Council of Ministers. Registration is open until 1 September.
Media literacy and democracy education will feature prominently in the Nordic Council of Ministers during the Finnish and Åland co-presidencies. The first day of the Media Literacy and Democracy Education for Societal Resilience conference at the Central Library Oodi will focus specifically on media education.
Keynote speakers will be Professor Julian McDougall from Bournemouth University and Senior Researcher Minna Aslama Horowitz from the University of Helsinki and the DECA project. After the presentations, the results of the Nordic media survey will be published and presented, with comments from representatives of all five Nordic countries.
The event will be opened by Mari-Leena Talvitie, Minister of Science and Culture, and Villano Qiriazi, Head of Education Department at the Council of Europe, will also speak.
After the lunch break, there will be a series of parallel sessions, where participants can choose between teacher training, lifelong learning or media education in libraries.
Friday’s session will focus on democracy and pariticipation. The morning session will cover topics such as teaching controversial subjects, youth councils and digital citizenship from a teaching perspective.
